Simple repairs you can tackle on your own
Keeping your home in good shape doesn’t always mean calling in the pros. While some jobs are best left to experts, there are plenty of small fixes you can do yourself no special skills required.
Dripping Taps
A leaky tap wastes water and gets annoying fast. Most of the time, it’s just a worn washer. Turn off your water, unscrew the tap, replace the washer or O-ring, and reassemble. A 15-minute fix that can save litres of water every day.
Re-Sealing a Bath or Shower
Mouldy or cracked silicone? Peel it off, clean the area thoroughly, and run a fresh bead of bathroom sealant. Let it dry for 24 hours and your bathroom instantly looks fresher.
Bleeding Radiators
Cold spots on your radiator? Grab a radiator key, open the valve until water starts to trickle, and close it up. That’ll get your heating working properly again.
Unblocking Sinks
Use a plunger or, for tougher clogs, unscrew the U-bend under the sink (put a bucket underneath first). Clean it out, screw it back on, and you’re good to go.
Filling Nail Holes or Cracks
Fill small wall holes with ready-mixed filler, smooth it with a spatula, then sand and paint once dry. Quick and easy, and your walls look brand new.
Loose Hinges or Handles
A few turns of a screwdriver is often all it takes to tighten wobbly cupboard doors or squeaky hinges. Quick win, big difference.
